This week: A Creedence Clearwater Revival anniversary!

Just because we like the band. Not because the anniversary changed the planet or music in any way. But still...

This week back in 1970 (the 16 of December to be exact) Creedence Clearwater Revival had not on, not two, not three but four (4) albums certified Gold in the USA.

Bayou Country (1969), Green River (1969), Willy and the Poor Boys (1969) and Cosmo’s Factory (1970). And, yes, those were the days when an artist/a band could release two albums a year. Let's see Taylor Cyrus and Rihanna Swift do that!

Mindblowing Zappa studio footage with The Ikettes

A mix between the 1973 Mothers at The Roxy stage and a studio rehearsal.
How incredible to see them rehearse. So much fun and musical talent. The back up vocalists Debbie and Lynn. (Debbie Wilson and Linda Sims of The Ikettes). Frank, in his best mood...

This is a hidden bonus track on the brand new Roxy The Movie. Highly recommended DVD!

John Fogerty's memoir is here!

Since the second vinyl single I ever bought was Creedence Clearwater Revival's Up Around The Bend and the second vinyl album I bought was Cosmo's Factory by that very same group, John Fogerty has been a lifelong part of my interest in music.

After Creendence Clearwater Revival broke up a lot of stuff happened that kept him out of the limelight for years. So when I saw that he was releasing his memoirs this autumn I was intrigued. I was hoping that I'd get a bit more of an insight into what happened and who John Fogerty is.

So yesterday it dawned on me that the book was out. Titled Fortunate Son: My Life, My Music it has been available since October 6 and a quick search on Google Play Books had me buying a copy for 75 Swedish kronor. About 15 USD or 6 GBP.
And ... so it happened that I had bought my very first digital book!

Further investigation informed me that there's also an audio book version with John himself reading. Perhaps something Santa brings me this Christmas?
For the time being it's time to read the book that is descibed this way on johnfogerty.com:

The long-awaited memoir from John Fogerty, the legendary singer-songwriter and creative force behind Creedence Clearwater Revival.

Creedence Clearwater Revival is one of the most important and beloved bands in the history of rock, and John Fogerty wrote, sang, and produced their instantly recognizable classics: "Proud Mary","Bad Moon Rising," "Born on the Bayou," and more. Now he reveals how he brought CCR to number one in the world, eclipsing even the Beatles in 1969.

By the next year, though, Creedence was falling apart; their amazing, enduring success exploded and faded in just a few short years. FORTUNATE SON takes readers from Fogerty's Northern California roots, through Creedence's success and the retreat from music and public life, to his hard-won revival as a solo artist who finally found love.
And yes, there are a few Creedence classics as well as Fogerty solo stuff on the Radio Dupree playlist right now.

AC/DC in Sweden '76: played during intermission in a dance band venue

Talk about cultural clash. When hard rocking AC/DC did their debut in Sweden 1976, they were booked as entertainment act during intermission on a dance band stage in the Swedish countryside.
Here is a link to a radio documentary about the odd event:
http://sverigesradio.se/sida/avsnitt/530137?programid=3103

And hey! It's in Swedish. And we don't know if it's possible to listen outside Sweden. But still...

Gail Zappa dead at 70

GZ and FZ, London 1972.
Gail Zappa, widow of music artist Frank Zappa, passed away yesterday after some time of illness.
She was the one who ran Frank's business. She wasn't loved by all his fans. Some of them thought she did not allow the music to be heard, trying to forbid festivals to perform it etc.
Many seem to forget that she had a great impact on Frank's output over the years, and that she indeed released a whole bunch of Frank's music after his death.
Arthur Barrow (bass player with Frank 1978-80) comments on Facebook: "She could be hard to get along with sometimes, but Frank really loved her."

Celebrating 40 years of Bongo Fury

In October Radio Dupree will play all songs from the great Zappa/Beefheart album Bongo Fury, which was released in October 1975.
As you may know, we select an Album of the Month each month. In September it was Help! by The Beatles (celebrating 50 years). In October it's time for one of Zappa's most profilic albums, a bit underrated we would say. Lots of alternative song versions from later albums too! Enjoy!

Bob Dylan contributes to Swedish-Danish crime series

Bob Dylan seems to be a fan of the popular Swedish-Danish crime drama television series Bron (The Bridge), and the somewhat shy music icon even seems to be eager to take part in it.
Sveriges Television reports that the production team received an e-mail from Dylan's agency where they expressed that Dylan liked the series and wondered if the team would like to have a Dylan song in it. And yes, the song that will be heard played on a car radio in the upcoming third season is The Ballad of a Thin Man.

Album art gets me curious: Seven Men In Neckties

So I was reminded about the "old" days when leafing through row after row of vinyl records in the record store sometimes had you buying a record just because the cover looked great. Made you curious. Left you with a feeling that you'd like the music on the record once you got it home and put it on the record player.

The reminder was this CD cover among a pile of CD's that I haven't listened to yet:

The Microphone Septet - Seven Men In Necties

To my eyes this looks like my ears will like the music. But I don't know. Will give it a listen and add my thoutghts in a day or five.

Filmmaker and illustrator Jane Aaron dies at 67

She did animations on the Sesame Street television series, illustrated children's books and made short films.
Radio Dupree came across her name when she collaborated with Donald Fagen, and we'll just quote our own post from April 2010:

Back in the second half of the 1980's Donald Fagen wrote the music to three short films directed by Jane Aaron; Traveling Light, Set In Motion and This Time Around. The connection being that Jane's brother Peter had been at Bard College at the same time as Donald and Walter Becker.

Two of the three videos can be enjoyed on the internet. More on Jane in this Animation World Network article.

Big success for McCartney in Stockholm

Paul McCartney in Stockholm July 9, 2015. Photo: Sigurd Huckle/Radio Dupree.
Sir Paul's concert in Stockholm, Sweden on July 9 was nothing but a success. It lasted for 2 hours and 45 minutes and featured 40 (!) songs from his long career.
The song selection was great, mostly Beatles songs of course but also some fine songs from his post Beatles carreer.

Paul was in top shape and moved around the stage so easy that one had to wonder if he he really is 73 years old.
The band was top notch and played really heavy on some songs.

Some of the highlights were Blackbird (Paul solo), Live And Let Die, Birthday, and from the final encore; Helter Skelter (very heavy!) and the Abbey Road finale Golden Slumbers/Carry that Weight/The End.
Epic, Sir Paul!

One of the surprises this night was when the band segwayed into Jimi Hendrix Foxy Lady at the end of Let Me Roll It. No vocals on Foxy Lady but here Paul showcased his abilities on the electric guitar. Paul took the chance to tell one of those nice little stories, this time about Hendrix playing gigs in the UK in the 60's and that he used his whammy bar so much that the strings got out of tune. Before the next song Jimi tried to get in contact with Paul in the audience and ask him to send up Eric Clapton to tune the guitar. But Clapton just smiled and shook his head and said something like: "You tune that guitar yourself." Jimi could surely have used a Floyd Rose.

Paul McCartney changed instruments a lot during the evening. Started off with the old Höfner bass and then he used severeal different electric and acoustic guitars.
Paul commented the many changes of instruments something like this:
"You may wonder why all these changes of guitars. But we want to let you know that we have them and we want to show off."
Half way through the show he told the story of the song Blackbird, that it is sort of a civil rights movement song. The lads had noticed how afro-americans were treated in the US south:
"We wanted to encourage them."
A funny story came at the end of the show around the song Back In The USSR. Paul told the audience about when Wings was the first rock group to play on the Red Square in Moscow (in 2003). There were many officials/hotshots around to see them and the Russian defense minister was one of them. He came up to Paul: "Hey Paul, you know the first record I bought was Love Me Do."

The songs performed in Tele2 Arena, Stockholm on July 9, 2015:
Eight days a week
Save us
Got to get you into my life
One after 909
Temporary secretary
Let me roll it (plus Foxy Lady)
Paperback writer
My Valentine
Nineteen hundred and eighty-five
The long and winding road
Maybe I'm amazed
I've Just seen a face
We can work it out
Another day
Hope for the future
And I love her
Blackbird
Here today
New
Queenie eye
Lady Madonna
All together now
Lovely Rita
Eleanor Rigby
Being for the benefit of Mr Kite!
Something
Ob-la-di, ob-la-da
Band on the run
Back in the USSR
Let it be
Live and let die
Hey Jude

Encore I:
Another girl
Birthday
Can't buy me love

Encore II:
Yesterday
Helter skelter
Golden slumbers
Carry that weight
The end

Walter Becker's Circus Money is seven!

Yes. This week it is seven years ago since Circus Money was released. A great album back then and we think that it is even better in 2015!

So we're featuring it on Radio Dupree. Every single track. On the playlist. Now.

11 Tracks of Whack and Circus Money. The next and third one is hopefully on the way and in the works. (The world would be a better place with a third Walter Becker solo album in it!)
